Day 1: Arrive in Rapid City, Explore Historic Deadwood

Preferred Lodging: The Lodge at Deadwood: Deadwood, SD

We will pick up guests from hotels in the Rapid City area or directly from Rapid City Regional Airport around noon. Making our way into the Black Hills, we’ll arrive in the famous mining town of Deadwood where we will stay for the next two evenings. You will be able to wander the streets, shops, and casinos of this famous city before settling in at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Resort for a group welcome dinner.    


Day 2: Spearfish Canyon, DC Booth Fish Hatchery, Devils Tower

Our morning will begin with a drive up through Spearfish Canyon where we will admire the river cut stone bluffs, and pay a visit to Bridal Veil Falls. We will stop for lunch at the scenic DC Booth Fish Hatchery where you can stroll the grounds and hand-feed the thousands of farm-raised trout. We will then drive west for a brief jaunt into northwestern Wyoming where we will visit the culturally significant Devils Tower National Monument. After a few hours to walk around the monolith, we will return to Deadwood for a relaxing evening. 


Day 3: Deadwood Museums, Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore Lighting Ceremony

This morning you are encouraged to sleep in. You may use your Flex Pass to eat at the hotel dining room or walk into town to find alternative dining. Optional morning tours in Deadwood include the historic Adams House focused on showcasing early Native American, state history, and pioneer artifacts, or the Days of 76 Museum displaying the rich history of gold mining in the Black Hills. After lunch, we will depart for Crazy Horse Memorial where you can view an extensive museum of Native American artifacts and join a bus tour to the base of the monument. We will depart for Mt. Rushmore later in the afternoon to grab dinner and witness a patriotic lighting ceremony featuring a short documentary film about our nation. After the ceremony, we will check in to your sought-after accommodations at the Hotel Alex Johnson.

 

Day 4: Air and Space Museum, Wall Drugstore, Badlands National Park

This morning we will enjoy an in-transit breakfast on the motor coach as we make our way to the South Dakota Air and Space Museum, directly adjacent to Ellsworth Airforce Base. After a self-guided stroll through the aircrafts on display, and learning about ICBMs present in South Dakota during the Cold War, we will head east to the historic town of Wall. We will take a few hours to shop at the Wall Drugstore and you may use your Flex Pass to enjoy lunch in the area. Next, we will head into the multicolored soil labyrinth of Badlands National Park. Our stops in the park will include Ben Reifel Visitor’s Center, Hay Butte, Yellow Mounds, and the Pinnacles Overlook. We will arrive back in Rapid City for a quiet evening of relaxation.

 

Day 5: Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, Custer State Park

After breakfast at the hotel, we will depart for the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary where you will have opportunities to get up close and personal with some of America’s last unmanaged wild horse herds. A two-hour bus tour through the sanctuary property will bring you to panoramic views of the black hills, and the filming locations of several prominent Westerns. We will have lunch in-transit before proceeding through Custer State Park’s 18-mile wildlife loop.  Here we will have view wild bison herds, pronghorn, and groups of black-tailed prairie dogs, all of which have an integral role in the shortgrass prairie ecosystem. Our day will end with afternoon shopping opportunities in Hill City, and a fancy group dinner at the local gourmet Chute Rooster restaurant before returning to Rapid City.

 

Day 6: Black Hills Institute, Wind Caves National Park and Jewell Cave National Monument

This morning we will make our way to the Black Hills Geology Institute. Home to one of the largest fossil collections on the continent, the institute provides access to the largest collection of T-Rex fossils on earth. Around noon we will be departing for Wind Caves National Park where the Garden of Eden walking tour will provide you with unique views of the special limestone formations. This tour consists of 145 stairs spread out over a large area and is approved for limited mobility visitors. Next, we will make our way to Jewel Cave National Monument where we will take a brief guided tour into the main chamber to view beautiful large calcite crystals. We will arrive back in Rapid City in the late afternoon where the remainder of the day is yours to relax until we regroup for our farewell dinner.  

 

Day 7: The Journey Home
